Types of Therapy

Four Approaches to Fit Individual Needs

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

This is an evidence based treatment created for clients with chronic suicidal ideations and actions, self-harm and depression that was not able to be treated by most other therapies.  It can be adapted as a therapy for other behaviors including substance use, over-spending, unhealthy eating habits or most any impulsive behaviors. If you feel like you are an emotionally sensitive person who reacts without thinking, and you have been described by others as "out of control" this might be the right therapy for you.

Radically Open DBT

This therapy was developed to help many clients that DBT was not appropriate for but who may also be chronically suicidal, may also suffer from self-harm and have not been helped by other therapies.  This evidence-based therapy is more for overthinkers who may ultimately make ineffective decisions despite excessive thinking about the pros and cons of each option. The most common problematic ways of coping for these clients is inaction or avoidance.  They tend to struggle to identify their own emotions and feel disconnected and misunderstood by others.  Many people who are not in a small inner circle may see them as "fine."

Supportive Therapy

This option is much less focused on change.  My supportive therapy clients do not have big problematic behaviors they need to stop.  They mostly need a place for self reflection and non-judgmental feedback.  This may be short-term, while you are working through a difficult moment in your life, or could be an ongoing place for support and help in solving life's problems big, small and in between.

Informed Therapy

Both DBT and RO DBT are very structured and ask quite a bit of the client.  Supportive therapy is not effective if the client's goal is to change their behavior.  DBT informed therapy or RO DBT informed therapy allow you to access the skills, principles and any other aspects of the therapy you like into your less structured supportive therapy sessions.  This means it is not DBT but is informed by DBT and might be the best fit if you have a few behaviors you want to work on but feel the intensity of DBT is more than what you need.

Family support

I offer individual therapy to children as young as 11 years old.  Adolescents benefit most from therapy when the parents are involved.  When working with children and teens, I provide family therapy and parenting sessions to improve outcomes.

Skills Groups

Learning a better way

Skills groups offer you a place to learn new ways of coping.  The group setting is a supportive environment where you will obtain an understanding of the principals of change and practice the skills as you learn them.
